Being the Moon

Recently, my daughter was studying the moon in a science unit at school. I was reminded of how the moon is only a dark rock. It has no light of its own. It cannot produce light from within, but only reflect light from the sun. At times, we see the moon shining brightly and other times it only reflects a sliver of light.

I am like the moon. On my own, I can’t produce any light. No matter what good things I might say or do, I am unable to make light. Really, all I can do is reflect the One True Light to others.  Jesus said, “I am the Light of the world.” John 8:12

When I turn away from God and busy myself with my own agenda, I may be a dark rock or reflect only a sliver of God’s light to others. But just like the moon, when I turn my face toward God, His truth and promises, I can reflect more of God’s light to others.

Remember the image of Moses when he came down from the mountain after spending time in God’s presence? His face was glowing! Exodus 34:29 tells us that Moses wasn’t even aware that his face was radiant because he had spoken with the Lord.  I find this so encouraging. If I spend time in God’s presence, I won’t even be aware of how I’m reflecting God’s light to others. My job isn’t to try and manufacture light, but to spend time in God’s presence so I can reflect His light to others.

As a wife, a mom, a friend, a coach, a daughter, I need God’s light to shine through me. Where do you need God’s light today?

God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. 1 John 1:5b. Spend time in the presence of the Light and be His reflection to others.
